What is a .WLX file?

A .WLX file is a type of temporary file used by a program that Microsoft used to have called Live Mesh. This program was made to help people keep their files the same across different computers, online storage spaces like Windows Live SkyDrives, and other places where you can store files. The .WLX file is like a marker or a note that says, "I still need to get the real file from another place." It's there to hold a spot until the actual file can be brought over to where you are storing your files locally.

To open a .WLX file, you would use Microsoft OneDrive, which is the program that took over after Live Mesh was stopped in 2013. So, even though we talk about Live Mesh here, it's really Microsoft OneDrive that you would use now for anything related to .WLX files.

Here's a simple example to understand how it works: Imagine you have a picture called "myimage.png" that you want to get from an online storage space to your computer. Live Mesh (or now OneDrive) would make a temporary file called "myimage.png.wlx" on your computer. This .WLX file is just there to say, "Hey, I'm waiting for the real picture to arrive." Once the real "myimage.png" is downloaded to your computer, the .WLX file is no longer needed and gets removed. It's like a placeholder for the actual file during the synchronization or downloading process.
