What is a .WBK file?
A .WBK file is a special kind of file that is made by Microsoft Word, which is a program many people use to write documents on computers that run Windows or macOS. Think of a .WBK file as a safety net for your work. It's like having a backup copy of an important paper or project. This backup is really useful if the original file gets lost or messed up somehow. Normally, when you make a document in Word, it saves as a .DOCX or .DOC file. The .WBK file is like a duplicate of this, but it's only made if you tell Word you want it to save backups.
To open a .WBK file, you just need to use Microsoft Word 365 or the regular Microsoft Word program. These programs know how to read the .WBK file and can help you get back your lost or damaged document.
To make sure Word is saving these backup .WBK files, you have to turn on a specific setting. By default, Word doesn't save these backups, so you have to do a little bit of setup: - If you're using Word 2003, you go to the "Tools" menu, then "Options," and finally the "Save" tab to find the option. - In Word 2007, you click the big Microsoft Office Button, choose "Word Options," then "Advanced," and look for the setting under "Save." - For Word 365, click "File," then "More...," go to "Options," choose "Advanced," and scroll until you see the "Save" section.
If you can't find a .WBK file but still need to recover a document, Word might have an auto-save version saved as an .ASD file. You can open this with Word too, and it might just have the latest changes you made before something went wrong.
