A .VPE file is a Photoshop Vanishing Point Export File, created by Adobe Systems.

Open with Adobe After Effects 2023. Available for Windows and Mac.

What is a .VPE file?

A .VPE file is a special kind of file that is made using a more advanced version of Adobe Photoshop, which is a program used for editing pictures and creating graphics. This file type is called a Photoshop Vanishing Point Export File. It is used to save certain settings called vanishing point planes that a designer has chosen on a flat, 2D (two-dimensional) image. These settings help in making a 2D image look like it has depth, similar to how things look smaller when they are farther away from us in real life.

For example, if you have a picture of a road that stretches off into the distance, you can use vanishing points to make it look more like you're actually standing on the road, looking into the horizon. This technique is very useful in creating more realistic and engaging images.

Once you have created a .VPE file in Photoshop, you can then use another program called Adobe After Effects to open it. Adobe After Effects is used for adding special effects to videos and images. When you import a .VPE file into After Effects, the program takes the flat image and splits it into different sections based on the planes you set up in Photoshop. This allows you to add effects like lighting to make the image look three-dimensional, even though it started as a flat 2D picture.

To open a .VPE file in Adobe After Effects (2023 version), you would go to the menu, choose "File," then "Import," and finally select "Vanishing Point (.vpe)." This tells After Effects to open the .VPE file and prepare it for editing.

If you want to create a .VPE file yourself, you would start in Adobe Photoshop Extended. First, you go to the "Filter" menu, choose "Vanishing Point," and then draw the areas on your image where you want to apply the 3D effects. After you're done setting up your planes, you select "Export for After Effects" from the Vanishing Point window. This saves your settings into a .VPE file, which you can then work with in After Effects to bring your 2D image to life.
