What is a .VOOM file?
A file that ends in .voom is a file that has been changed and locked by something called VOOM ransomware. This means the original file, like a photo (.jpg) or a document (.doc), gets a new ending added to it, making it look like .jpg.voom or .doc.voom. Once this happens, you can't open or use the file anymore because it's been encrypted, which is a way of locking the file so no one can see what's inside.
To try and fix this, you might use something called System Restore on your computer. This doesn't open the .voom file, but it might help get your computer back to how it was before the files were locked.
In March 2022, some people started noticing that their computers were attacked by VOOM ransomware. This bad software is a type of STOP ransomware that goes into your computer, locks your files like pictures and documents by encrypting them, and then changes their names by adding .voom at the end. After doing this, it leaves a note in every folder that has a locked file. This note is usually a text file named _readme.txt, and it tells you that your files have been locked. It also says you need to pay money to unlock them. The note asks for $980, but says if you contact the people behind this within 72 hours, you only need to pay $490.
You might wonder how this ransomware got onto your computer. It often comes from downloading and installing programs that seem okay but are actually bad for your computer because they have adware or malware hidden in them. So, if you recently downloaded something from a place that wasn't completely trustworthy, that might be how the VOOM ransomware got in.
