What is a .USERRETURN file?
A .USERRETURN file is a simple text document that is made by an app called ES File Explorer, which is used on Android devices to help people look through and organize their files. This file is pretty straightforward because it only has a little bit of text in it, which includes two specific numbers. Right now, no one is really sure what the purpose of these numbers is or why they are saved in this file.
You can open a .USERRETURN file with several different programs. Even though GitHub Atom, which could open it, is no longer available, you can still use any basic text editor that you have on your computer or device. For example, if you have a Windows computer, you can use Microsoft Notepad, which comes with the operating system. If you're using a Mac, Apple TextEdit is another program that comes with your computer and can open this file. For those on Android, the ES File Explorer File Manager itself can open it, as well as other text editing apps like QuickEdit by Rhythm Software and Jota Text Editor by Aquamarine Networks. Chrome OS users can use Google Chrome Text, which is included with the operating system.
It's important to note that ES File Explorer, the app that creates .USERRETURN files, was removed from the Google Play Store by Google in 2019. Google said that ES File Explorer and some other apps made by the same company were involved in something called click fraud. Despite this, the app still creates the .USERRETURN file on devices where it is installed, but the exact reason why it does this remains a mystery.
