.UAE File Extension

A .UAE file is a WinUAE Configuration File, created by WinUAE.

Open with Vim. Available for Linux, Windows, and Mac.

What is a .UAE file?

A .UAE file is a special kind of file that helps run an Amiga computer emulator called WinUAE on Windows computers. Think of it as a set of instructions that tells WinUAE exactly how to act like an old Amiga computer. This includes what kind of Amiga computer it's pretending to be, along with details like the computer's brain (CPU), its memory (RAM), and what kind of graphics and sound it can handle.

To use these .UAE files, you go into a part of WinUAE called the Configurations menu. Here, you can tell WinUAE to start using a .UAE file you've chosen, or you can save the settings you've just made into a new .UAE file. This is handy because it lets you quickly set up the emulator just the way you like it, without having to redo all the settings every time you start WinUAE.

You can open and edit .UAE files with simple text editing programs like Microsoft Notepad, which comes with Windows, or Apple TextEdit, which comes with macOS. These programs let you see and change the instructions inside the .UAE file in plain text. More advanced text editors like Vim can also be used, especially if you're comfortable with its more complex commands.

For example, if you're a fan of Amiga games or software, you can use WinUAE to make your modern computer act like an Amiga. First, you'd adjust settings in WinUAE to get the right Amiga model, with the correct type of CPU, memory, and so on. Once you're happy with your setup, you save these settings into a .UAE file. Later, you can load this .UAE file to quickly get back to your custom Amiga setup, ready to run your favorite Amiga programs or games.

In short, .UAE files are like recipes that tell WinUAE how to recreate different Amiga computers. You can write these recipes yourself using a text editor, or use WinUAE to make and save them for you. This makes it easier and more fun to explore the world of Amiga on your modern PC.
