.SAVE File Extension

A .SAVE file is a Nano Temporary Save File, created by Nano.

Open with GNU Nano. Available for Linux.

What is a .SAVE file?

The ".SAVE" file extension is linked to a type of file known as a Nano Temporary Save File. This kind of file is specifically created by the nano text editor, which is a program used on Unix systems for editing text. The ".SAVE" file comes into play under certain conditions while using nano. For example, if the nano program suddenly has to stop because of specific signals from the operating system (like SIGHUP or SIGTERM) or if it runs out of the memory it needs to keep running, it will create a ".SAVE" file. This is nano's way of trying to save your work so you don't lose it.

When nano creates a ".SAVE" file, it saves this file in the same folder where you were working. The name of the ".SAVE" file is usually the name of the file you were editing, but with ".save" added to the end. However, if you hadn't saved your file at all before nano ran into trouble, the program will save your work as "nano.save" by default.

To open a ".SAVE" file, you can use the GNU Nano program itself. Nano is available on Unix systems, but you can also run it on Mac OS X. On a Mac, you would use the Terminal application to start nano and then open the ".SAVE" file for editing or to recover your work. Terminal is like a doorway into the more technical, text-based side of Mac OS X, allowing you to run programs like nano directly with text commands.
