What is a .RPM file?

An RPM file is a type of file that helps you install software on computers that use Linux, a popular operating system. Think of it as a box that contains everything needed to get a new program running on your computer. Originally, it was made for a version of Linux called Red Hat, but now many different versions of Linux can use it.

To open an RPM file and install its contents, you can use a program called Red Hat Package Manager, which is specifically designed for this task. There are also other programs like Alien, File Viewer Plus (which you can download from the Microsoft store), 7-Zip, Incredible Bee Archiver, and The Unarchiver that can open or work with RPM files.

Sometimes, you might need to change an RPM file into a different type of installation file, like a .DEB file, which is used by another version of Linux called Debian. There's a handy tool called Alien that does exactly this. By using a simple command in Alien, you can convert an RPM file into a DEB file, making it possible to install the software on Debian-based Linux systems. The command you would use in Alien looks something like this: "alien package_name.rpm", which transforms the RPM into a new DEB file ready for installation.
