What is a .REPP file?

A .repp file is a type of file that has been locked by a harmful computer program called Repp ransomware. This program is a kind of harmful software, known as ransomware, that gets onto your computer and locks your files, making them inaccessible. The Repp ransomware is a version of another harmful program called STOP (Djvu) and it started causing problems for people in early 2020.

When a file is locked by this ransomware, its name is changed by adding ".repp" at the end. For example, if you had a file named "holiday_photo.jpg", after the ransomware attacks, it would be renamed to "holiday_photo.jpg.repp". This means the file is encrypted, or locked in a way that you can't just change its name back to open it. It's like the file has been put in a safe, and you need a special key to open it.

Unfortunately, there aren't programs that can simply open or fix these .repp files because they are encrypted. One way to try to get your files back is by using a feature on your computer called System Restore, but this might not always work, especially if the ransomware has affected those backup files too.

The Repp ransomware usually gets onto your computer if you accidentally download a harmful file or click on a bad link. This can happen by opening an email that looks real but isn't, clicking on fake ads on social media, or downloading something from a website that shares files illegally.

Once the ransomware is on your computer, it starts to lock various types of files, such as your documents, pictures, videos, and even backup files. It targets common file types like .DOCX (Word documents), .JPG (images), .WMV (videos), and .DB (database files). After locking the files, it leaves a note in a text file named _readme.txt in the folders with the locked files. This note tells you that your files have been locked and asks for money to unlock them.

It's important to know that paying the ransom does not guarantee you'll get your files back. The best protection against ransomware is to regularly back up your files and be very careful about what you download and click on the internet.
