What is a .PLR file?

A .PLR file is a type of file used by the game Terraria, which is developed by Re-Logic. Terraria is a 2D game that combines action, exploration, and sandbox elements, allowing players to build structures, fight various creatures, and explore large worlds. The .PLR file contains all the information about a player's profile in the game.

When a player starts playing Terraria, they need to create a profile where they can set up their character. During this setup, players choose their character's name, gender, appearance, and the type of game they want to play, such as Journey, Classic, Mediumcore, or Hardcore. Once the profile is created, it is saved as a .PLR file.

As the player continues to play, the game updates the .PLR file with new information such as the character's maximum health points (HP) and mana points (MP), the items they have in their inventory, any special abilities or buffs they have acquired, and how long they have played. This file helps the game keep track of all the important details about the player's progress.

To view or manage player profiles, Terraria displays these .PLR files on its "Select Player" screen. This allows players to choose which profile they want to use when starting the game.

The .PLR files are stored on the player's computer in specific directories. For Windows users, these files are located in `~/Users/YourUserName/Documents/My Games/Terraria/Players`. Mac users can find them in `~/Users/YourUserName/Library/Application Support/Terraria/Players`.

Additionally, Terraria creates backup files for each player profile, which have the extension .plr.bak. These backup files are stored in the same directories as the original .PLR files and serve as a safety measure in case the original files are lost or corrupted.

To open a .PLR file, you simply need to run the Terraria game, as it is the program designed to read and utilize these files. There are also web tools like Terrasavr that can be used to view or edit .PLR files outside of the game, providing more flexibility in managing player data.
