What is a .PKX file?
The file extension .PKX refers to a type of file known as a Decrypted 3DS Pokémon Save File. This type of file is specifically used with Pokémon video games on the Nintendo 3DS gaming console, including popular titles like Pokémon X and Pokémon Y. The .PKX file contains important data about Pokémon characters such as their species, experience points (EXP), abilities, attacks, and the details of their current owner.
To manage and modify these .PKX files, you can use a program called PKHeX. PKHeX is a software tool designed for Windows computers that allows players to open and edit the contents of .PKX files. It is particularly useful for Pokémon enthusiasts who want to customize their gaming experience by adjusting their Pokémon's attributes.
Additionally, .PKX files are often extracted from another file type called .BIN. This extraction can be done using a tool known as a PKX dumper utility. Once extracted, these files can be opened in PKHeX. PKHeX also offers the capability to convert older Pokémon save files (from generation 3, 4, and 5, which have the .PKM extension) into the newer .PKX format. However, it's important to note that PKHeX can only work with files that have been decrypted, meaning any encryption on the files must be removed before they can be used with PKHeX.
