What is a .PEK file?
A .PEK file is a special kind of file that helps Adobe programs like Premiere Pro, After Effects, Soundbooth, and Encore show you what the sound looks like. Instead of hearing the sound, you see it as waves on the screen. This helps when you are editing videos or audio because you can see where the sound gets louder or quieter.
You can open .PEK files with several Adobe programs, including the 2023 versions of Premiere Pro, After Effects, and Audition, as well as Adobe Encore CS6. These programs use .PEK files to make editing easier and faster because you can see the audio waves without having to play the sound.
When Adobe programs work with audio, they use something called Adobe Media Encoder. This creates .PEK files along with another type of file called .CFA. The .CFA files have the actual sound in a format that the computer can use easily. The .PEK files just have the picture of the sound waves.
If you ever need to save space on your computer, you can delete .PEK and .CFA files. Don't worry, the Adobe programs will make them again when they need them, unless you told the program not to save these files anymore. Also, it's good to know that Adobe Soundbooth was replaced by Adobe Audition in 2011, so newer versions of these programs will use Audition instead of Soundbooth.
