What is a .OFFICEUI file?
An .OFFICEUI file is a type of settings file specifically used by Microsoft Office, which is a widely-used set of programs designed to help with productivity tasks like word processing, creating spreadsheets, and making presentations. This file contains XML code, which is a way to store data in a structured format. The XML code in an OFFICEUI file is used to customize how the Microsoft Office ribbons look and function. Ribbons are the toolbars you see at the top of Office programs like Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, and they include tabs, commands, and groups of options.
Each Microsoft Office application has its own specific OFFICEUI file. For instance, the customization file for Microsoft Word is named Word.officeui. If you make changes to the ribbon in Word, these changes are saved in the Word.officeui file and do not affect the ribbons in other Office applications like Excel or PowerPoint. If you want to customize the ribbons in other Office applications, you need to do so separately within each application.
To customize a ribbon in any Microsoft Office application, you can right-click on the ribbon area and select "Customize the Ribbon." From there, you can add, remove, or rearrange the tabs and tools to suit your needs. For those who are more experienced with coding, it's also possible to directly edit the XML code in the OFFICEUI file to make changes.
The OFFICEUI files are typically stored in specific folders on your computer. On Windows, these files can be found in either `%LocalAppData%/Microsoft/Office` or `%AppData%/Microsoft/Office`, depending on your settings. On a Mac, they are located in `Users/~/Library/Containers/{Office App Name}/Data/Library/Preferences`.
If you want to share your customized ribbon with another Microsoft Office user, you can export your settings to an .EXPORTEDUI file. To do this, right-click on the ribbon, select "Customize the Ribbon," then choose "Import/Export" followed by "Export all customizations." Save the .EXPORTEDUI file and share it with another user. They can then import this file by selecting "Import customization file" from the same menu, allowing them to use your custom ribbon setup in their Office application.
Note that the use of OFFICEUI files started with Microsoft Office 2010, but these files are compatible with later versions of the Office suite.
