Open with Visual Computing Lab Nexus. Available for Linux, Windows, and Mac.

What is a .NXS file?

An NXS file is a type of 3D model file. It is specifically created and used by a software toolkit called Nexus 3D model toolkit. This toolkit is designed to work with very large 3D models. The models that go into an NXS file usually start as either .PLY files, which are called Polygon Model files, or .OBJ files, known as Wavefront 3D Object files. These types of files are common in 3D modeling and contain detailed information about the shapes, textures, and colors of a 3D object.

To create an NXS file, these .PLY or .OBJ files are converted into the NXS format. This is done using a tool called Nxsbuild, which is part of the Nexus 3D model toolkit. The reason for converting to NXS is that this format is better suited for handling very large 3D models, making it easier to work with them in terms of loading times and performance.

Once you have an NXS file, you might want to view or interact with the 3D model it contains. To do this, you can use a program called Nxsview, also part of the Nexus 3D model toolkit. Nxsview allows you to open and view the 3D model stored in the NXS file, giving you a visual representation of the model.

If you're looking to work with NXS files, you'll specifically need to use the Visual Computing Lab Nexus software. This software includes both Nxsbuild and Nxsview, providing the tools necessary to create and view NXS files. It's designed for those who need to manage very large 3D models, such as in the fields of 3D animation, game development, or scientific visualization.
