What is a .NMO file?
A file with the .NMO extension is a type of file that has been taken over and locked by a specific kind of harmful software known as NMO ransomware. This ransomware changes the names of files like documents, images, videos, or other types of files by encrypting them, which means it scrambles the contents so you can't access them without a special key. The .NMO extension is added to the end of the file's original name, along with an email address, resulting in a new, longer file name such as .docx.[dr.nemo@tutanota.com].nmo.
The purpose of this is to force the owner of the files to contact the attacker via the provided email to negotiate and potentially pay a ransom to get the decryption key needed to unlock the files. For example, if you had a file named "photo.jpg," after the attack, it might be renamed to "photo.jpg.[dr.nemo@tutanota.com].nmo." To deal with files affected by NMO ransomware, one recommended approach is using the System Restore function on your computer. This can roll back your system to a previous state before the ransomware infected your files. However, this might not always recover all encrypted files, especially if backups were not set up or were also compromised.

Like Dharma, which uses the .DHARMA extension for encrypted files, NMO encrypts files and leaves a ransom note, typically named info.txt, with instructions supposedly to help decrypt the files.
