What is a .MCR file?

The file extension .MCR stands for a 3ds Max Macroscript File, but in the context of Minecraft, it refers to a specific type of game file used by the popular game Minecraft, which is a game where players build and explore virtual worlds made out of blocks. The .MCR file contains data for a 32x32 region of a Minecraft world. This means it holds the information for a specific area within the game, including all the blocks and items in that area.

The files are named in a specific way: r.x.z.mcr, where "x" and "z" are numbers that represent the coordinates of the region in the Minecraft world. These coordinates help identify where the region is located on the game map. The numbers "x" and "z" are calculated by dividing the actual chunk coordinates by 32. For example, a region at chunk coordinates (64, 0) would be in a file named r.2.0.mcr.

To open and work with .MCR files, you can use the game Minecraft itself, as it automatically reads these files when loading game worlds. Additionally, a tool called NBTExplorer can also open .MCR files. NBTExplorer is a program that allows users to view and edit data in Minecraft's file formats, including .MCR files.

It's important to note that .MCR files were first introduced in the Beta 1.3 version of Minecraft and were later replaced by a new format called "Anvil" which uses .MCA files. Before .MCR files, Minecraft used .DAT files for storing world data. This evolution in file formats shows how Minecraft has developed and improved the way it handles game world data over time.
