What is a .KSD file?

The .KSD file extension refers to a "KeepSafe File" which is a type of sound file used by Native Instruments Massive, a digital audio workstation (DAW). This program is designed for music producers and sound designers to create and manipulate complex sounds, particularly powerful bass lines and intricate sound textures. The .KSD file contains a preset or a sound designed by the user, which includes various settings such as filters, amplifiers, effects, noise levels, and oscillators.

Native Instruments Massive is the primary software used to open and manage .KSD files. However, it's important to note that the .KSD format was used in versions of Massive up to 1.2. Starting from version 1.3, Massive uses the .NMSV file format instead, although it still offers support for opening older .KSD files.

To create and save a .KSD file in Massive version 1.2 or earlier, you would typically go to the "File" menu, choose "Save" or "Save As...", name your file, select a location for saving, and then click "Save". If you need to open a .KSD file in these versions, you would go to "File", then "Open Sound...", select the .KSD file, and click "Open".

For users of Massive version 1.3 or later, while the software primarily uses the .NMSV format, it still provides an option to import .KSD files. To do this, go to "File", select "Import KSD Sound...", choose the .KSD file you wish to open, and click "Open". If you have a collection of .KSD files and you've upgraded to a newer version of Massive, you can use the "KSD Batch Convert" feature to convert multiple files at once. This is done by selecting "File", then "KSD Batch Convert...", choosing the folder containing your .KSD files, and clicking "OK".

This conversion feature is particularly useful for users who have extensive libraries of sounds in the .KSD format and wish to continue using these sounds in the newer versions of Massive.
