What is a .JCR file?

These puzzles are also known by other names like griddlers, paint-by-numbers, or hanjie.
The .JCR file contains all the information needed for a nonogram puzzle, but it's saved in a binary format. This is a way of saving data that computers can easily read and process, but it's not easy for humans to understand if they open the file in a text editor. This format is similar to another file type used for nonogram puzzles, the .JAP file.
If you have a .JCR file, you can open it using a program called QNonograms. This program understands the binary format of the .JCR file and can display the nonogram puzzle in a way that you can interact with to solve the puzzle.
When you're solving a nonogram puzzle, you'll see a grid with numbers at the beginning of each row and column. These numbers tell you how many squares in that row or column should be filled in, and in what groups. Your job is to figure out which specific squares to fill in to match these clues, which will eventually reveal a hidden picture when the puzzle is completed.
It's also worth noting that there's another file type, the .CWD file, which is similar to the .JCR and .JAP files. However, the .CWD file stores the nonogram puzzle information in plain text, which is easier for humans to read but not as compact or efficient for computers to process as the binary format used in .JCR files.
