.ITL File Extension

A .ITL file is a iTunes Library File, created by Apple.

Open with Apple iTunes (Discontinued). Available for Windows and Mac.

What is a .ITL file?

The .ITL file extension stands for an iTunes Library File. This type of file is a database that iTunes, a music and media player application, uses to keep track of all the files in your iTunes music library. Inside this file, you'll find information like a list of all the songs you have, any playlists you've made, the ratings you've given to songs, and any comments you've added.

To open a .ITL file, you would typically use the Apple iTunes program. However, it's important to note that Apple has discontinued iTunes, so it might not be available or supported in the future.

For those using Windows computers, the iTunes library file is usually saved in a specific path on your computer, which looks like this: \Documents and Settings\username\My Documents\My Music\iTunes\iTunes Library.itl. If you're on a Mac, the file is saved in a slightly different location: /Users/username/Music/iTunes/iTunes Library. Interestingly, on Mac computers, the file doesn't show the ".itl" extension, but it's the same type of file.

Both Mac and Windows versions of iTunes also save another file called "iTunes Music Library.xml" in the same folder as the .ITL file. This XML file shares your music and playlists with other applications, like iPhoto and iMovie on Mac, making it easier to use your music across different apps.

If for some reason your iTunes library file (.ITL) gets deleted, don't worry too much. iTunes has a way to rebuild it by searching through your Music folder for songs. However, this process won't recover any playlists, song ratings, or comments you had before, as those are stored in the .ITL file itself.
