.IMPORT File Extension

A .IMPORT file is a Godot Engine Import Settings File, created by Godot.

Open with Godot Engine. Available for Linux, Windows, and Mac.

What is a .IMPORT file?

An .IMPORT file is a special kind of file used by the Godot Engine, which is a program that lets people make their own video games for free. This file doesn't contain the game itself, but it has important instructions in simple text about how different files that are added to a game project, like pictures or sounds, should look or behave once they're part of the game. For example, it can tell the game how clear a picture should be or if a video should keep playing over and over.

To open or work with an .IMPORT file, you need to use the Godot Engine program. This is because the .IMPORT file is made specifically for managing how things are shown or used in games created with Godot Engine.

Here's a bit more about how it works: When you're making a game and you decide to add something new to it, like a background image (.PNG), a sound effect (.WAV), or music (.OGG), Godot Engine helps by creating an .IMPORT file. This file is placed in the same folder as the item you just added to your game. The name of the .IMPORT file is very similar to the original file you added, but it ends with ".import". So, if you add a sound file named "happytune.wav" to your game, Godot Engine will create a new file called "happytune.wav.import" in the same place as "happytune.wav". This new file tells the game engine how to use "happytune.wav" in your game according to the settings you choose, like how loud it should be or if it should loop (start over again after it finishes).
