What is a .ICAP file?
An .ICAP file is a special type of file used by people who create and edit documents, especially when they are working together but not in the same place. It is made by a program called Adobe InDesign, which is used for designing things like magazines, flyers, and books. This file is meant to be opened and edited with another program called Adobe InCopy. Adobe InCopy is a tool for writers and editors to change text or add new text to documents created in Adobe InDesign.
Think of an .ICAP file like a box that contains a smaller box (.ICMA file) and some files (.ICML files) that are squeezed together to make them easier to send over the internet. These files are parts of a bigger Adobe InDesign document, like a paragraph or a picture, that someone needs to work on separately without changing the whole document.
To open an .ICAP file, you need to use Adobe InCopy 2023 or Adobe InDesign 2023. These are the latest versions of the software that can handle these files.
The reason Adobe made the .ICAP file format is for situations where people working together on a document can't easily share files directly with each other, maybe because they don't have permission to access certain files or they don't have a good internet connection. So, if someone is working on a design in Adobe InDesign and needs a writer or editor to work on some text, they can pack up the parts that need editing into an .ICAP file and send it over to the person using Adobe InCopy. After editing, the InCopy user can pack it back up and send it to the InDesign user to put it back into the original document.
Here's how someone using Adobe InDesign can make an .ICAP file: 1. They start by creating an assignment in InDesign and picking the parts of the document they want to include. 2. Then, they go to the "Assignments" panel, find their assignment, and choose "Package for InCopy" from the menu. 3. They give the package a name, decide where to save it, and then save it.
It's important to know that this way of working together with .ICAP files is something that started with Adobe InCopy and InDesign CS4, which are older versions of the software. Before that, they used a different file extension called .INCP.
