What is a .GSHEET file?
A .GSHEET file is a special kind of file that acts like a shortcut or a link to open a spreadsheet in Google Sheets, which is a program for making and editing spreadsheets online. This file is stored in Google Drive, a place on the internet where you can keep your files. The .GSHEET file doesn't contain the actual spreadsheet data but has information that points to where the spreadsheet is on Google Drive. It also includes which Gmail account was used to make the spreadsheet. This means when you click on a .GSHEET file, it will open the spreadsheet in Google Sheets through your web browser, as long as you are logged into the correct Gmail account.
Google Drive for Desktop, a program that lets you access your Google Drive files directly from your computer, creates .GSHEET files. Even though these files are meant to work with Google Sheets and Google Drive, you can open them with any text editor like Notepad or TextEdit. However, opening them in a text editor will only show you the link to the spreadsheet and some additional information, not the spreadsheet itself.
To properly open and work with the spreadsheet the .GSHEET file points to, you can use Google Drive for Desktop or access Google Drive through a web browser on any operating system, including Chrome OS, which comes with support for Google Drive and Google Sheets built-in. This means if you're using a Chromebook or any device running Chrome OS, you can easily open .GSHEET files without needing any additional software.
