What is a .GG file?
The .GG file is a type of file used with Google Desktop, which was a program that let you have small applications, or "gadgets", right on your computer's desktop. These gadgets could do a lot of different things, like showing you the latest news, updates on sports scores, financial information, or even fun little games and search tools. It's a bit like having mini-apps for quick access to information or entertainment without having to open a full application or browser.
To open a .GG file, you would have needed Google Desktop installed on your computer. However, it's important to know that Google Desktop isn't available anymore since it was discontinued in 2011. This means you can't really use these .GG files in the way they were originally intended anymore.
Google Desktop gadgets were quite similar to other types of gadget files you might find on different operating systems, like the .WDGT files used by Apple's Dashboard feature on Macs, or the .GADGET files that were used on Windows Vista and Windows 7 for desktop widgets.
Inside, .GG files are actually a collection of web-related files like HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and XML, all packed together in a compressed format, which is usually .ZIP. This means that, technically, if you know how to work with these types of web files, you could potentially unpack a .GG file and look at its contents, but making it work like it did as a Google Desktop gadget would be challenging without the original Google Desktop environment.
