What is a .FOLIO file?
A .FOLIO file is a special kind of digital file made by Adobe, the company that makes a lot of design and publishing software. It's made using a program called InDesign, which is used to arrange pages for things like magazines, brochures, or any kind of publication. Inside a .FOLIO file, you can find digital articles, which means pieces of writing, pictures, or other content that you can read or interact with on a computer or mobile device. It also has information about the articles and a bunch of folders that keep all the data organized.
You can open .FOLIO files with Adobe InDesign 2023, which is the latest version of the program that lets you create and edit these files. There's also something called Adobe Content Viewer, which used to let you view .FOLIO files on devices like iPhones, iPads, and Android devices, but Adobe doesn't support it anymore.
A .FOLIO file is a bit like a book you make in InDesign, where you can add different parts like articles, a cover, and a table of contents. You can start making these files with InDesign CS5 and newer versions. These files are cool because they let you add interactive stuff for your readers, like pop-up windows for buying things or making the content fit perfectly on whatever device you're using, like a tablet or smartphone.
To work on a .FOLIO file in InDesign, you use something called the Folio Builder, which you can find by going to the "Window" menu and then clicking on "Folio Builder." Adobe also had a service for sharing and publishing these files, but after 2014, if you're using older versions of InDesign like CS5 or CS5.5, you can't upload your .FOLIO files to Adobe's service anymore.
So, if you want to make or look at a .FOLIO file, you'll need the latest InDesign program for making or editing, and to remember that viewing them on mobile devices might not work with the old Adobe Content Viewer app.
