What is a .EFU file?
The .EFU file extension is used for a type of file called an Encryptafile Public Key File. This file is important for keeping digital information secure. It contains a special code, known as a public key, which is written in a format called hexadecimal. This code is a crucial part of a security process used to make sure that files are safe and have not been tampered with.
When someone wants to protect a file using Encryptafile (which usually has the extension .EFL), they use a pair of keys: a public key (.EFU file) and a private key (.EFR file). The public key is shared openly, meaning anyone can see it, while the private key is kept secret by the owner. These two keys work together to verify that a file is genuine and hasn't been changed by someone else. This is called digitally signing a file.
To open and use .EFU files, you need a specific program called XenoSystems Encryptafile. This software understands how to read the public key inside the .EFU file and use it to check the security of encrypted files.
There's also a rule about the size of the public key in the .EFU file. It must be at least 16 bits long, which is a very small amount of data, but it can't be more than 7128 bits, which is a much larger amount of data. This size range ensures that the key is complex enough to offer good security without being too unwieldy to use.
