.DT2 File Extension

A .DT2 file is a DTED Level 2 File, created by Microsoft.

Open with Microsoft Windows Live Messenger. Available for Windows.

What is a .DT2 file?

The .DT2 file extension refers to a DTED Level 2 File, which is specifically used by Windows Live Messenger, a program that was popular for online chatting. These files are image files that contain emoticons, which are small images used to express emotions in online communications. The emoticons within .DT2 files are typically in either .GIF or .PNG format.

These files are integral for adding visual expressions to messages in chat windows on Windows Live Messenger. If needed, you can rename these files with a ".gif" or ".png" extension, which allows them to be opened with standard image viewers.

To open a .DT2 file, you would traditionally use Microsoft Windows Live Messenger. However, it's important to note that Windows Live Messenger was discontinued in 2013 and its services have since been integrated into Skype. Despite this, if you still have .DT2 files, you can rename them to .gif or .png to view them in any common image viewer.

For users who had these files on their computers, they were typically stored in specific directories. On Windows XP, you could find .DT2 files in "\Application Data\Microsoft\Messenger\[LiveID]\ObjectStore\CustomEmoticons". On Windows Vista, the storage path was slightly different: "\AppData\Microsoft\Messenger\[LiveID]\ObjectStore\CustomEmoticons".

Additionally, .DT2 files often work in conjunction with .ID2 files to manage and display emoticons in the messenger application. Since the discontinuation of Windows Live Messenger, managing these files for their original purpose (use in the messenger) is no longer applicable, but they can still be viewed as image files by adjusting their file extensions.
