What is a .DKE file?
A .DKE file is a special kind of computer file used by a program called DriveLock Full Disk Encryption, or DriveLock FDE for short. This program helps keep your computer's hard drive safe by scrambling the information on it so that only people with the right key can see it. Think of it like putting a lock on a treasure chest; the .DKE file is the key that can unlock it.
When you use DriveLock to protect your hard drive, it creates a .DKE file. This file is very important because it holds the secret code (decryption key) needed to open up your hard drive and see your files again after they've been scrambled (encrypted). Without this .DKE file, you wouldn't be able to get back to your information.
To open a .DKE file, you need to use the DriveLock FDE program. This is the same program that made the file in the first place. DriveLock makes a .DKE file as part of a set of files (called a recovery Zip package) when it locks up your hard drive. If you ever need to unlock your hard drive, you have to give DriveLock this .DKE file along with the password you chose when you first locked your hard drive.
It's important to remember that once you've used the .DKE file to unlock your hard drive, you don't need the .DKE file anymore. In fact, it's a good idea to delete it so nobody else can use it to unlock your hard drive without your permission.
