What is a .DIV file?
A .DIV file is a special kind of file used with a program called DIVA-GIS. DIVA-GIS is a tool that helps people make maps and analyze geographic information. When you create a project in DIVA-GIS, it saves your work as a .DIV file. This file includes a picture of your map and different layers. Layers are like transparent sheets that you can put on top of your map to show different things, like rivers, roads, or population. The .DIV file also keeps track of the map's size and the center point you're focusing on.
To open a .DIV file, you need to use the DIVA-GIS program. Inside DIVA-GIS, you can start a new project by going to the menu and choosing Project → New. If you want to add new things to your map, like objects or information, you go to Layer → Add. This is how you build your map step by step.
It's important to know that while your .DIV file includes the layers you've added, the actual data for these layers is kept in different files, usually with a .SHP extension. These files are stored in another place on your computer. This means if you ever delete a .DIV project file, the information in your layers is still safe because it's stored separately.
