What is a .CRD file?

A .CRD file is a type of document used by guitarists to learn and share songs. It is essentially a guitar chord file that includes song lyrics along with the corresponding guitar chords and tabs. The content of a CRD file is straightforward: it features the song's title, any relevant comments, the lyrics of the song presented line by line, and the guitar chords shown in brackets (for example, [D] for a D chord).

The format of a CRD file is plain text, which means it can be opened and edited with any basic text editing software. Some of the common programs that can open a .CRD file include: - Basic text editors like Microsoft Notepad and Apple TextEdit, which are included with their respective operating systems. - More advanced text editors like Microsoft WordPad and MacroMates TextMate, which offer additional formatting options. - Specialized chord and lyric software like ChordPro, which also supports the legacy CRD format. - Any web browser, as the file is in plain text format and can be displayed directly in a browser window. - Other text editors like Leafpad and gedit, which are typically found on Linux-based systems. - Google Chrome Text and Chrome OS, which provide integrated text editing capabilities.

The CRD file format was originally developed by Martin Leclerc and Mario Dorion in 1992 as part of the "chord" tool, which was used to create lead sheets (documents containing song lyrics and chords). Although development of the original tool ceased, Johan Vromans later introduced ChordPro in 2016, which replaced the older CRD format with the new .cho file format. Despite this, ChordPro still supports the older CRD files as a legacy format.

It's important to note that while the CRD format is primarily associated with the .crd file extension, it can also use extensions like .chord, .chopro, and .pro. This flexibility allows different programs and users to maintain compatibility with older files or preferences in file naming.
